I am not from Austin but for Comal County most of the recommended fruit varieties are between 500-600 hours..I would suggest getting with the Master Gardeners or Ag. extension (now call Texas agri-life)folks for Travis County as to recommended varieties and by going over these you will know the chill hours for your area. Micro-climates in and out of the city can vary it 100+ hours. Because I am in a cold area here in Comal County I look at 550-650 chill hours as being more reasonable.

I was jut out at the natural Gardener on Saterday, and the huge fruit tree display had a sign posted listing all the different areas of austin and their relating Chill hours. Things do change depending where you live. I forget the numbers.

Deanna. If you're ever up for a road trip, a trip to the Natural Gardener will be well worth your time and gas. It's like a Gardener's Disneyland to me. I make the drive to Hill Country Watergardens and it takes about 30 min.

Yes Hill Country Watergardens for me is 3 min drive at most if I get a red light. I love it there. They have expanded their place and are stocking more plants. I am sure I will visit the Natural Gardener soon. I bet it will be a good spring for the plant places as the freezing weather took out alot of plants in the area. If what you want to know is the chill hours, Call them and ask them. They are nice and very helpful.

I'm in south Austin and I used http://www.getchill.net/ to see what my specific area gets for chilling hours. You can find your closest weather station to calculate your own using the link on the page. For Brodie just south of Slaughter in the Shady Hollow/Bear Creek area here are the numbers:

2010: 620 – 980

2011: 627 – 779

2012: 588 – 767

2013: 896 – 1183

2014: 963 – 1066

2015: 590 – 699

Apparently there are different ways to calculate the numbers. The low number is hours between 32 and 45 degrees, the high number is total hours under 45 degrees. Hope this helps!
