I suppose why nobody has answered your question is because there are so many different earthworms (never mind all the other worms), it would almost impossible to identify them without some picture(s).

Hi me and my wife have begone researche about that what can we use worms in change sludge to useful material for ecology at all my education is agricultural eng and my wife is chemical . please help us GOOD THANKS

This is obviously an old posting which did not generate much response, but it caught my attention as I was previewing old threads in this forum which is new to me. The huge worms mentioned by african were probably intestinal worms from a slaughtering house for either pigs or cows which discharged into a municipal wastewater treatment facility...a fairly common occurance to find these on influent screening rakes since packing houses are notorious for bypassing their pretreatment processes.

The interesting thing about this topic is a worms abbilty to actually live for long periods of time submerged under water. The importance of this is that many vermiculturist believe they can drown their worms if the media gets too wet, when actually what happens is they will die from lack of oxygen if the media goes anaerobic. It usually takes a considerable amount of time before a drenched media will go anaerobic and the smell will be really pungent if it does. Point being...do not panic if you do get more moisture in you media than necessary and simply take your time to correct the problem. There are a number of good ways to do this and if anyone is really interested in this topic...lets talk.
