Anna Russian plants

Does anyone know where I can obtain Anna Russian in a plant rather than seeds? I had ordered one, but there must have been a mix up in my order and it was not there when the plants arrived. The place I ordered from does not answer the phone or return calls for the past couple of days, and emails take weeks. This was one of the top tomatoes on my list to try this year, my first and only heart variety. I can only plant a few tomato plants and I spend a long time, LOL, too long really, picking out exactly which ones I am going to try. So far I have zero success in finding a place that has what I want and actually delivers them, as ordered, without errors or unauthorized substitutions. I have next week off, the weather is supposed to warm up again and I plan to get my garden planted. I need to know exactly what I am going to have and not have before then. I would really like to find an Anna Russian plant by then if at all possible.

Thanks,

Sue

Looks like you are CT. Topmost Herb Farm in Coventry, CT looks like they have them in plant form. This will be the first year I have used them so I don't have an opinion yet.

That is awesome, thank you! I have never been there or heard of them before but I would love to check them out. I used to go to Caprilands Herb Farm in Coventry. Since the owner of that farm died, I don't know if it is still there and haven't been out that way in a while. I will give them a call and see when they put Tomato plants out for sale. Maybe I can convince them to hold a plant for me until I can get out there.

    Thanks again!

I have a few rather thin looking plants that I can spare if you want. by far the worst looking plant of the 17 varieties I have.

You know that with such unusual selections you really need to take up growing your own from seed next year. That's the only way to avoid all the problems you have had this year.

As an alternative consider making a deal with a local grower to do them for you. Many will be glad to do it for a nominal fee if you provide the seeds.

Thanks, erlybird, I will let you know if I can't get them locally. I really appreciate it.

Dave, I know you are right. There must be something cosmic that makes sellers of tomato plants choose me to not send the plants to when they are short a few plants in that variety, and to ignore my phone calls, messages and emails. I know people are busy this time of year, but you really have to not care what your customers think of your service to not answer phones or return a message for 4 or 5 days. Hopefully no one is sick or in the hospital, but in my experience that is usually not the case. But I won't mention names unless/until I know how they will address the issue.

I also have some others naturally. Moskovich, Yellow Pear, Black Prince, Uralskiy Ranniy, Extremme Bush, Manitoba, Sub-Artic Plenty, Tiny Tim, Siberia, Stupice and Rutgers. Wish I had more of Cherokee Purple, Brandywine, Green Zebra and Hendersons Pink Ponderosa but I don't.

I'm very impressed with everything except the Anna Russian. Only one plant has set fruit so far. Hoping to have ripe fruit before the month is over on these puppies!

    Let me know.

If you have fruit set already in zone 5 CT you are doing quite well! I will let you know and thanks. I am wondering if soil temps will be a little low in zone 6 CT for tomatoes next week. Supposed to warm up to 80 by the end of the week, temps are still going down into the 40s at night for the next few days.

You could always use a low tunnel or plastic mulch to warm things up.

Mine have been in the ground since April 19, hoophouse with low tunnels inside of that. I'm cheating nature for now. But I have a mole problem in the cool season beds.

Did you get that thunder storm last night? Man, I rushed in all my potted plants at midnight!

    Happy Gardening.

LOL, I did get the thunderstorm. I really am not motivated enough to get into hoop houses and everything. I just need enough tomatoes for myself, some to give away and a little canning. Looks like it will be warm enough without them, though.

    Happy Gardening to you, too.

I am getting ready to put out an all points bulletin on the forum for the person I placed my tomatoes order with. Has ignored ALL phone messages AND an email for at least a week. I hate this.

I know at our local nursery they sell Anna Russian in plant form, but I'm in MD and thats quite a hike from you. I started my Anna from seed this year, its looking a little spindly but going out this week. Hopefully some full sun will do it good.

I'd suggest taking great care with that as it will also call some of your claims and your expectations into question just as it did in the other thread you posted your complaints in. You may not be happy with the vendor, and that's fine, but most are so you may not like some of the responses you get.

So if you feel you must, then use the Rate and Review Vendors forum here at GW where such posts are appropriate. But honestly, it is probably best now to just accept that you got most of what you ordered and apparently in more than ample time for planting out. It is time to move on. ;)

I said that because that was the only way I did get a response. I would be very happy for a private response as well.

    Dave,

I am certainly not ready to make any conclusions about this vendor unless/until I am able to make contact. This could have been a simple error and easily correctable. I won't know if I can't make contact. THAT is the issue. It may be that measuring response time in weeks rather than days is the norm here, even by phone as well as email, and others may be fine with that even if I am not. It may be that certain days or hours are better for reaching someone, but if that is the case I don't have that information. I believe in my last post, with that person, it was suggested that calling would have been better to resolve things sooner, so I have kept that advise in mind and that is what I have done this time. It just hasn't helped in this situation, so it is very possible that that my current vendor and I are just not well matched as a business and customer. Either way, that vendor rating site I was not aware of, I am only familiar with the one on another large garden site. Can you tell me how to find it? It would certainly come in handy in the future in deciding who I might like to try.

I was actually happy with everything from Tasteful garden if they hadn't made substitutions without checking with me. THEY were actually the ones I was referring to when I said it must be something cosmic that I can't actually get the correct plants that I order. In that case it was not an error but they stated they had made substitions when I had requested that they not do so. But plants, health, response time, etc. were fine. I would not mind giving them a mostly positive rating. I also used White Flower Farm, and despite many negatives I have read about them and the ridiculous prices, the order was correct and complete, the plants large and healthy, maybe in part due to the fact that they are close to me and orders get here overnight. They are a large nursery, though, with many employees and so customer service and response time is immediate.

There is also another site that I believe stated very honestly on the web site what their situation was more hobbyists than business, and that if you could not wait as long as necessary to consider going elsewhere. While I might use them in the future, I do keep that in mind and did decide to go elsewhere for plants that would make up the majority of my garden for the year.

If everything else is great and long response times are the only problem, I don't think it would be unfair to say so. It might even help to avoid similar issues in the future and help ensure that expectations are realistic on both sides.

By the way, I did not reference my previous post. I did not want to reveal the identity of this site/business/person until I had more information. It is your assumption that it is the same. That may or may not be the case.

I reread your message realized you said that Rating Vendors was its own forum and I was able to find it. Thank you. We should reference that site more in the discussions of vendors that go on here and maybe it would be used more and become even more useful. I have used some of the sites they list such as Bluestone Perennials and I have also been very happy with them. I will have start posting some of my favorite vendors there. Thanks again for the suggestion.

If you feel like driving to New Hampshire we have Anna Russian, plus 93 other tomato varieties (including 62 Heirlooms!

Wow, sounds like a nice selection. Thanks. What is the name of your business? That is a little far to drive for tomato plants, though. White Flower Farm is a little over and hour and a half each way and I had them mail them, LOL. It might be nice sometime when I am looking for somewhere nice to take a drive. Spring is kind of a busy time with work, lawn and gardening chores to be done.

After going 'round-'n-'round with trying to come up with a name we decided on our first names: Tom & Robin's Garden. We wanted to avoid some of the "poofy" names people sometimes use.

Don't know where you are located in CT, but the White Flower Farm in Litchfield is hosting Tomatomania this upcoming weekend, and they usually have loads of different varieties. I would check them out if you aren't too far away. The farm is also really beautiful if you just want a great place to spend a few hours. If you google tomatomania you can get the info.
