Growing Tomatoes

Early Girl

It is my intention to grown a tomato up on an 8-foot stake this year. I was advised to buy Early Girl which I did but now I notice that Early Girl doesnt seem to have any suckers to tear off growing between the main stems. Is that okay? Sometimes people change the names of the plants. Is Early Girl the best choice to grown on a 8 foot stake I now wonder.

If you bought the indeterminate Early Girl you should get a pretty big plant. There is also a bush Early Girl that is determinate. It will not get very tall. If the blossom clusters are at the end of the branches then you may have the bush type. If you search the web for pics of each type of tomatoes (indeterminate/determinate) you should be able to tell the difference.

In my garden, Early Girl F1 hasn't gotten terribly large plants compared to some varieties, but I know Early Girl F1 can get huge. It probably depends on your soil and watering.

I wonder how Matina would do for your purpose. It gets huge whether you water it or not, but it seems to produce better with more water. It might pull down the stake, though.
