Since most cat food is grains and meat, I don't think that would be a good idea.

Spilled dry cat food would be okay in small amounts, but canned cat food contains meat and could lead to bacterial issues. It would have to rot a bit before the worms would touch it, and if you think freshly opened canned cat food smells bad, just wait...

Dig a hole and bury it.

Thanks for your replies. I was positive it wasn't a good idea but every time I throw something out, I wonder if it can go to "the lads" (DH's nickname for them).

I did vermicomposting years ago when I had my house with my former hubby. This is my first attempt in an apartment and I don't want to run into many problems if I can help it!

bcomplx---are you speaking from experience with the odor of old, fermented cat food? lol

If you have a regular compost bin that gets good n hot, I'd put the cat food in there. Otherwise, burying it in the garden may be the best bet. I'm a real stickler about throwing stuff out in the trash, if I have my way, the trash would only go out about once a month since most stuff will be going into the compost, recycling, garden, etc.

If you are trying to avoid issues with your worm bin. Feed lightly and don't let it get too moist.

I've got it easy as my worm bins are outdoors.

No compost bin here, as I live in an apartment building.

I mentioned in another posting of mine that I've got frozen food in containers on the balcony. I do try and make sure I'm not overfeeding, because fruit flies would be horrible!
I've got 1 bin going, and the good news is I signed up for our vermicomposting class that the waste management has every year in June. I'll get a few worms and a bin for attending. I can't wait to have 2 bins going.
Then comes the worry of what to do with the castings. LOL
