Vermicomposting

worm compost and miracle-gro

Hello

Over a year of vermicomposting I now have a small quantity of worm castings, which I'm planning to use to start growing veg in containers. I'm a first-time gardener and can't wait to start planting things.

Unfortunately the only other compost I have is miracle-gro which I bought ages ago...

My question is - would it be wrong to mix the two together? Would it harm the worms that would then hatch from leftover cocoons? I'm loathe to throw it away, but then I don't fancy mixing it with the nice worm compost.

Is it better, environmentally, to use up the miracle-gro seeing as I have it, or cut losses and get some organic stuff?

If it were me - I'd mix them together and use them. You'd be surprised what the worms can tolerate!

why not try using it in small concentrations with the worm castings?

Have you used a synthetic fertilizer in the past on your garden? Did you still have worms in your garden? Keep the concentration down and there really shouldn't be a problem.

And if the miracle grow potting mix is that old, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Worms only leave is the salt burns them or if there is no organic matter left for them to eat.

Maybe you could experiment and see which potting medium performs best?
