Husky Cherry Red

My local fleet store does not seem to be carrying my favorite Husky Red Cherry this Spring but does have a tomato called Large Red Cherry or Big Red Cherry instead. Are these the same as the Husky Red? I have not seen them at any other store/garden center yet either. So I may have to find a substitute. I have grown many different cherry tomatoes over the years and LOVE the Husky Red. I know some plants go by many names.

Sid, I generally see it called Husky Cherry Red; afaik, that and Husky Red Cherry are its only two names. It is a hybrid dwarf, growing to about 4'. [It is not the same tomato as Husky Red.]

Large Red Cherry is open-pollinated; the vine will probably grow to at least 8'; and its fruit are usually slightly larger (either a large cherry or up to 2", depending who's describing it).

Husky Cherry Red is one of the varieties available at our Walmart, grown by Bonnie Plants (their pots usually have green plastic ring label along the top edge, if that sounds familiar to you). Our Lowe's and Home Depot usually have Bonnie tomatoes, so you might try looking there if there are any stores close to you. [Be aware that Bonnie doesn't ship all the varieties it sells to every part of the country.] If you'd like to buy some seeds and grow your own next year, Tomato Growers Supply and Totally Tomatoes probably carry it.

you can also check Home Depot if there is one near you. That's where I got mine.

There used to be a whole series of varieties named Husky this or that, but they were introduced at a time when folks were not familiar with the rugose type foliage that they had and rugose foliage is puckered and deep green and I think it's beautiful.

If you go to the FAQ's here there's an article about leaf forms and you'll find, as I remember, a picture of rugose foliage there.

All to say that the series was not popular b'c of the foliage, as told to me by the then marketing director at Petoseed where they were bred.

The only one remaining of that original series is the Husky Red Cherry F1 and I linked to it below, from Tomato Growers Suppply in Fort Myers, FL, where seeds are available, as they are at other sites as well.

    Hope that helps.

The above link is not the one I wanted so I'll try again and if this one doesn't work, just go to Tomato Growers Supply, click on the small fruited ones, enter Husky Red Cherry in the search box and there you'll find it along with other cherries.

OK, I give up it just won't transfer so go directly to TGS and find it as I said above.

Just go back from Wal-Mart and they had it in stock. If your local Wal-Mart doesn't, you might ask if they can order for the next delivery since their supplier definitely stocks them in their stores.

I will check around some more. have not checked out W-Mart yet. Thanks every one. My usual store does not have everything stocked yet so maybe they are still coming. Thanks for the links Carolyn!
