I started my bin last year and my DH thinks I'm a nut. He gets mad when he has to move the banana peels, fruit rinds, veggie scraps, and all the other scraps to get to his ice cream.

One reason I have waited so long is because of our previous fruit fly problems. So, like you, we are going to be freezing our scraps.

I gave up worms for an entire 6 months about 15 years ago. Could not abide being without them and started over, too.

My guys live in plastic bins from big box store. No holes. Plastic screening over the top held down with boards I found somewhere.

One cold winter (in another state, not zone 9), I moved them into the bathroom where my DH swears they talked to him. Worms are fine. DH may be weird.

I used lots of torn cardboard properly soaked until damp. When we are going to be away for an extended time (months) I add sugar to the soaking water. Keeps those babies busy.

I know the feeling!! Due to a marriage breakdown and subsequent selling of the house, I haven't vermicomposted for a few years. I missed the little guys like crazy and HATED throwing out all food scraps!

Even though I live in an apartment, and now have a new sweetie, I decided to start my unusual but fulfilling hobby again. My SO (I hate this term, but not sure what else to call him) is quite okay with it, as long as he doesn't see an actual worm. He too has to move ice cream containers of food, clearly labelled, to get to the ice cream.
He does affectionately call the worms "the lads", as in "Do I save the coffee grounds for the lads?", so there is definitely acceptance on his part.

Last night I was reading past posts. I needed to leave the computer for a moment and when I came back DH was reading. Of course he was reading about a mass excape. He enjoyed the posters comments about globs of worms by the hundreds pouring over the side of the bin! LOL

He asked me later if he was going to end up stepping on a worm first thing in the morning! Oh I love this man! I said "No! I'm always up before you!"

On a side note, my worms haven't moved into the food at all. I think I made a mistake with the coir, for I didn't rinse it. I've read that there is a lot of salt in it.

They are still alive and I'm just waiting for my "New Bin" to settle and the bactiria to get going on the food. The bed is made of shredded old bills and sweepstakes, mixed with last years fallen leaves. Planning to mix in some of my compost for the bactiria, but it's still frozen solid! Yummy!
