Fertilizing In-ground Tomatoes

This is prompted by a remark by Dave (digdirt) in another thread: "Usually sprinkling dry fertilizers around plants is just a waste of fertilizer and has little to no benefit for the plants."

This seems counter-intuitive to me. Wouldn't plants benefit from rain and watering dissolving granular fertilizers like 5-10-10, 10-10-10 or the various specialized ones, however gradually?

If not, what would be some better ways to apply fertilizer once the plants are up and growing? Carolyn recommends fish/seaweed emulsions as foliar sprays and drenches. Anyone have additional recommendations? TIA.

Gary, who's trying to do the best he can for a whole lot of tomatoes this year.
