1) It MIGHT be normal, it depends on how much there is.

2) It is mold. Mold is just part of the composting process. There will always be mold in your bin. The question is how much mold do you have. Too much mold can make things a little messy for a while. Try not to feed too many grains all at once, and the mold should stay under control.

3) Moisture building up on the lid is normal. If you don't see moisture on the lid, your bin is probably too dry.

Mold is not bad in itself, and indicates that the food is ready for the worms to gobble up, but if the mold is very excessive, coupled with a lot of condensation it might be an indication of poor ventilation - not enough air holes, or possibly just too much food. What type of bin have you?

For what its worth, I too experienced both the mold (from feeding probably 8oz of rice) and moisture on the lid.

I think the mold is under control and since it came the worms have moved over to that area so I believe they are taking care of it.

I was a bit worried about the moisture on the lid and added some additional shredded newspaper on top about 1" layer just to keep some balance.

I have an OSCR JR setup so it is flow through and I don't think ventilation is an issue, as you couldn't POSSIBLY have more holes :)
