keep fruit flies out

so, summer is coming and i was wondering if anyone has tried putting cups of vinegar around to lure fruit flies out of the bin?

last summer, i had a bunch of fruit flies and let them be. the bin stayed healthy and all flies died in the late fall. i still, however, think they're incredibly annoying with their little maggots and such.
