Cedar Bin?

Has anyone used cedar to make a bin? DH was thinking of making a bin/tower for me out of cedar so it would last longer with all the moisture but I've read that cedar isn't good with worms.

Anyone tried it? I thought too that if cedar was a no go that maybe using some kind of protection on pine would produce good results too?

He is willing to help me with my projects, but doesn't want to be rebuilding or fixing a bin every 2yrs.

Any input would be helpful. I've just started my first Rubbermaid bin & DH wants something that is a little more appealing to the eyes. He wants to make one that I can put a basket of flowers on on the porch so no one knows what it is and we don't have this Rubbermaid sitting around. I'm not opposed to the Rubbermaid myself but am willing to see what we can do to work best for both of us.

Actually, truth be told, I would like to have several R. systems set up in the garage or basement eventually. We'll see if DH grows more fond of the worms when he has free fishing bait! :)

no problem with cedar or any other wood, any will last a lot more than 2 years ... you could always build a real pretty cedar box to fit the rubbermaid inside of and have the best of both :)

Thanks for the input! Good to know that we can use cedar if he wants to.

Hadn't thought of putting the R. inside a cedar box. I don't know yet what DH will want to do, but I'll have to mention that to him and see what he thinks.

cedar may have some minor negative qualitys for worms but it would probably still be just fine to use for a bin. After all, you don't want the worms to eat the bin. Treated lumber might not be so good though.

The cedar box with bins inside is a good idea. If you had a nice long cedar bench that had several worm bins inside that would look really cool!!!!

Another thing to keep in mind before you let him build anything. Especially if going outside. You may want it to have legs that you can place in small containers of mineral oil. This is to keep ants from getting into the bin since they won't try to cross a liquid.

Thanks for your input too. I have a lot to think about. Not sure what I want to do as I think I posted before. DH wants something that looks nice.. I want something that will handle lots of worms. I think cedar or wood around the R. containers would be a nice look.

I did mention to DH that I might just try and find a nice big wooden box that looked nice to put out on the porch to us like a bench and not even attempt the tower idea. He just looked at me. I think he likes the idea of the tower due to not having to do so much sorting or handling of everything. Not that he's even looked at the bin since he helped me set it up.

I did show him the possibility of a flow through system & he said that might work at some point if I thought I would keep up with it.... but would have to keep it in the garage where the temps stay pretty cool all year & almost freeze in winter. Not the ideal situation!

He's happy to help me, but I think he is tired of hearing me talk worms :)
