Agree with Trudi - cardboard is another good one and so are multiple layers of newspaper. The more layers the better - well, within reason. I don't think I'd go much past 4 or 5 layers. ;) Then this fall you can just till it all in and get soil improvement as an extra reward.

The only thing I was worried about was keeping the soil cool, but we're steady in the 80's to 90's. That's warm enough, don't you think? I've never mulched tomatoes before, actually!

So, really, I'm just trying to avoid all the problems beforehand, if it's even possible! LOL

Not that it is not a dumb question, it is actually a GOOD IDEA suggestion.
But to me it is an extra work. Call me lazy if you will. I figure those tiny weeds are not going to make a whole lot of difference to my mators
once they are established. Besides, I do some variation of sqr-ft technic, not rows like from here to eternity. lol
