I've read few other insects can live with the worms. But they "belong" to the bin, meaning they won't be tempted to colonize your home.

I read also in the "trouble-shootings" on different vermicompost website that one way to limit the mites population is to let the bin open and expose to light and air for a while. I'm sorry I didn't keep track of the sources of these information.

I'm a newbie to vermicomposting. I hope I'm not giving you erroneous information.

I suspect I will have mites too one day or another (eeeeck!!!!!). If they stay put in the bin and are not harming the worms (over-population of mites can deplete the available food or so I read) I think (hope, wish) I'll be able to get used to them.

Thank You for the advise. The little reddish mites were crawling all over the outside of the bins as well as inside, so, I put them outdoors with the lids off yesterday. I also turned all the bedding, 3 bins were quite soggy on the bottom, at the end that was not elevated, so I turned all the bedding up to the top. I didn't see many worms in two of the bins, 1 bin is doing fine. I think the worms in two bins may have died and decomposed in the last week. It is such a shame , my bins were working wonderfully, lots of compost being made.
