Here's what I do to get MG's to climb on poles or wooden fences---drive a few small nails in at the top and bottom of your pole, and string fishing line from nail to nail. The MG's will readily wrap around the line, and come fall, clean-up is very easy---just snip the line and remove!

I agree. You can also put the fishing line in whatever configuration you want - zigzag, horizontal rows, or straight to the top as mentioned. It's inexpensive, virtually invisible. It's sold in different strengths by the weight it can hold without breaking. 30 pound line should hold annual vines reliably all summer.

If you can get it to stay at the top of the pole by tying a knot somehow/somewhere, fishing line will also work on poles. I used a spiral of line last year to get morning glories to grow up the fat square post holding the roof over my porch. I did occasionally have to tuck straggly shoots under the line but I'm out there every day, only takes a second maybe once a week.

Twiners and tendril vines will be your best bet (as opposed to aerial roots like ivy or sprawlers like climbing roses.) MG's are a twiners.

Assuming you wanted to stick with annuals, other twiners to consider include hyacinth bean vine, coral vine, black-eyed susan vine (Thunbergia alata) or climbing snapdragon (Asarina). Sweet peas, passionflower (make sure it's not a rampant perennial), and cup-and-saucer-vine (Cobaea scandens) have tendrils.
