My dirt stinks!

It doesn't actually smell, but I think something is wrong with it . . . I have a corner of my yard about 6 ftx 6ft where nothing will grow. The rest of my yard does great, but for 10 years I've struggled getting anything to grow in this area. It is mostly shaded with about an hour of afternoon sun. I've tried sun plants (not enough sun) and shade plants. Currently I have holly fern, which is turning brown and not putting forth new growth, and variegated shell ginger with brown curling leaves toward the front of the bed. I now think it is the dirt. I've amended it a lot over the years and wonder if I've actually amended it too much.

What would you do?
