if you can't keep it in the house [many do], keep it from any direct sun outside and make sure it has good ventilation - the temp of the moist mass in the bin won't change as much as the temp of the outside air, and the bigger the better in that respect

60-80° may be "ideal" for good activity, but they can tolerate a pretty wide range .... my large bin is outside in freezing winters and hot summers and they haven't quit yet

So I live in North Texas, which has several months of consecutive 90-100 degree days. Will my garage or backyard be intolerable for the worms? That is my only concern about starting vermicomposting, because my wife does not want any worms in the house in any way shape or form.

I live in (sort of) North Texas too, Waldo and my worms are fine outside on the back porch as long as the bins are shaded in the hottest part of the day. My back porch faces full west and gets pretty hot in the afternoons, but when I check, they are always fat and happy under the moist newspaper 'blanket' on top of the bin. I'd rather have them indoors, but I get a lot of those pesky little fruit flies and I don't want THEM in the house. Cheryl
