Vermicompost top dressing

I am wondering if simply top dressing my soil with vermicompost can be sufficient for supplying nutrition to my plants. I like to minimize any soil disturbance because my garden has many trees and shrubs. I am aware that nitrogen can be lost through volatilization and that soil microbial activity is important to nutrient availability, but perhaps there will still be sufficient nutrients supplied to plants. Anyone have any experience?
