On those REALLY hot days.....

Instead of the "Ice Cube thing", just get a 1 gallon freezer bag, fill it with water and make your own block of ice. Take the unopened bag and just let it sit on the roof of your worm bin.

No excess moisture problems because the bag will contain the melted ice(Except for the water that sweats on the outside).

Works every time.

Jerry - that's such a great idea! So far my worms seem to do OK in really deep shade - but I would prefer to help them out a bit.

What is really hot? It can be 100 degrees in the shade in the summer. At what temp do I want to add ice? And what is deep shade-absolutely no sun ever?

Morphn - yes, in warm climates zero direct sun is best - the mass in a bin won't vary in temp as much as the air if not directly exposed to UV, will be some 'median' between day and night air temps

I'd be careful with the ice 'trick', condensation can cause problems with moisture levels ... I find that a couple sheets of newspaper on top the bedding with the plastic bag of extra shredded paper on top of that keeps a cooler wet surface that worms congregate on ... I usually find a couple dozen worms lazing on the wet paper right under the plastic

Bill, Are you using the bag of shredded paper (dry) solely as insulation?
