Wisteria can take up to ten years to bloom...

It was planted well over 10 years ago. Any other ideas?

Sometimes the vine is so happy where it is that it will continue to grow vines forever because "life is good" and it's in no rush to flower. I think of it as similar to how people often recommend not over-fertilzing morning glories so that you can avoid getting tons of foliage and vine rather than blooms.

As a stopgap measure, people have often reported success after doing some serious root pruning/severing around the base of the wisteria (starting out a foot or two from where the main trunk is growing, and going completely around the circumference with the root severing). This can trigger an "uh oh" response out of the wisteria, which can inturn force it to bloom the following season thinking "time is up" and it better reproduce (via flowering and seed). It will continue to grow roots though and the flowering mechanism should remain.

My Mother has had her wisteria for over 50 years. I now have a portion of her wisteria in my own yard. Mine did not bloom the first year I transplanted it, and it only had a few blooms last year. This year well did we get a show! The blooms were beautiful and plentiful. I've always been told that wisteria must have a fair amount of horizontal growth compared to its vertical growth. Mine is about 50/50 this year and in full sun. It only gets watered when it rains or if we water the grass. I constantly train all new growth to intertwine with the old growth and/or snip it off so it doesn't take over. I'll snip 2 or 3 new growths and train 1 or 2. I'm in No. Virginia, zone 6/7. Oh and my mother is in South Jersey Zone 6. Hope this helps!

I am in South Jersey also zone 7. My wisteria didn't bloom for ages until I root pruned it the year before last and it bloomed beautifully last year and even more blooms this year. I just took a spade and sliced all the way around it about one and a half foot out from the base of the plant. Mine looks like a huge bush it is almost as wide as it is tall, it isn't growing on anything except a mulberry bush that is the same height as the vines. Try root pruning it and see if it helps next year, along with a slight pruning of the branches.

Root pruning, then fertlize. Take a shovel about a foot from the base of the plant and go into the ground deep....do that on three sides of the base of the plant, then fertlize it. Do this in early spring for best results.
