Worms, Worms, and more Worms!

Today I removed my cherry tomato plant after a successful harvest. When I pulled the plant out there were over fifty worms living in the root system. I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t know what kind of worms but they were short and skinny. I remember some time back I found a worm under a rock and I decided to throw it in the five gallon bucket. It must have reproduced inside there. I know people get certain worms for worm bins but all worms are good worms right? So I figured I will leave them in the five gallon container were I transplanted my Big Boy starter plant. The way I figure they can only help the soil right?

Well not all worms are good but if they're red or purple and look anything like an earthworm, they're probably helping compost and aerate the soil a bit.

Ok, I am a bit puzzled. Why did your remove your cherry tomato plant? Most cherries will continue to produce tomatoes for an entire season.

Just wondering.

"Worm" as in earthworm?

As far as I know, EWs are AWESOME for soil...more the merrier. It means your soil is very organic and very conducive for EW to reproduce. But 50 worms in root systems...sounds bit ODD to me.

I haven't seen other worms in the yard other than grubs.

I have a worm bin in the house. I just love my worms.

If you have holes in your container for drainage when the food they want is all gone they might move on and leave through the holes.

Maybe add a little coffee grounds for them? Worms love UCG

I dug out a bush yesterday and had a bunch of worms in the roots. I was so happy! Worms were not in my yard much when I moved here. Adding organic matter made them want to hang around.
