The easiest way to build a DIY tower is with Rubbermade containers. These containers nest inside each other - it makes you wonder if they had worming in mind when they designed them ;-) .

One container on the bottom with no holes for drainage. Second container with holes in the bottom set into first container. Start worms in this container. Use lid to retain moisture. When this container begins to fill, set third container inside second container with holes in the bottom. Worms will crawl from second container into third container. Use as many levels as necessary, but you usually won't need to go beyond 4 levels.

I have read for vermicompost to be effective, not to use more than 20% in the mix. Based on this, I do not think your idea would work. It said that too much VC caused stunted growth.

Yes boreal_wormer. That is what I was remembering too. I am glad you posted a link to them. There are youtube videos that show a lady making these barrels, well the little openings. It takes time. The advantages are it brings the ground up to us so less reaching to the ground. It also seems to increase the square footage and thus the number of plants per square foot of space. Some great ideas in this concept of planting pockets in the side of a barrel. It is like the ground but better because it is higher up :-)

eqeq: Thanks for the link. Very interesting idea. Sent my neighbour the link and just waiting when they're going to make one. They were complaining about running out of garden to plant their stuff.
