How hot does it get where you are? It gets pretty hot here, and I keep mine outside all the time, on the north side of the house.

I make sure the food scraps are well covered with the bedding and don't have much trouble with fruit flies.

covering with a damp sheet of newspaper will suit the flies fine - they like a drink and can easily get under the paper around the edges someplace

try keeping food additions well covered as socks sez, and cover the top of the bin with a couple inches of shredded paper [not sheets] - keep the bedding damp but let the topmost paper dry out

also note that they may be fungus gnats rather than fruit flies, but just as irritating ... fungus gnats are anyplace wet "rotting" organics are, fruit flies are more interested in alcohol, sugars, vinegar and water

Thenks. Actually I don't know why but they seem to have decreased in number significantly over the last few days.... Maybe its the weather or something. But I'll do the dry sheet of newpaper next time if it happens.

The problem with keeping it outside is that I'll probably forget about it... (what an awful thing to say!). Especially on the north side of the house since thats the furthest spot from my kitchen. Thanks for the advice!
