I'm growing wisteria frutescens in a container. This is an american native and not as aggressive as the asian species. If you do decide to plant, don't be afraid to root-prune. It might be possible to slow it if you sink a pot of it with the bottom cut out, although I expect the roots would eventually find their way out but by then, root pruning could come into play.

To root-prune in-ground plants, you can get a shovel and sink it into the ground as deep as possible about 1 - 2 ft out from the vine's main trunk(s), and do that all around the circumference if possible. Some people do this as a continuous ring and others leave gaps in the ring for a less severe pruning (afterwhich they may do the gaps the following year). Either way will force it to regrow new feeder roots and slow the top growth but should also trigger it to self-preserve (hopefully by setting flower buds). This should also help reduce sucker growth as well.
