The only experience I have had with honeysuckle was when our neighbor's grew over the fence and onto our shrubs. Those shrubs were about 7 or 8 feet tall and the honeysuckle covered them. The spread of the vine was about 12 or 15 feet. It will definitely cover your nearby shrub if you let it, I guess it is a matter of choice. I don't know what variety ours was but it was pretty aggressive, and the shrubs became pretty wrapped up in the stuff. I thought it was pretty neat and the smell was incredible but Mom didn't agree. She was always trying to get rid of it. Have fun and enjoy!

Both the heckrotti and mandarin are hybrids made with native honeysuckles and aren't as aggressive as the asian species, however they can be a bit vigorous but controllable. I personally wouldn't let a woody vine grow into a shrub except maybe a clematis. What kind of shrub is it?

The shrub is called Seven Brothers or Autumn Lilac and is not very common. It grew very large 10' and produces fragrant white blooms Aug-Sept which the hummers loved.

harryshoe...if it was me, I think that shrub is so pretty. And if it has fragrant flowers that attract hummingbirds, I wouldn't let a honeysuckle crawl all over it. Unless as suggested above, it is not a very aggressive one.

Harryshoe, I just bought a 2' gold flame, are you saying it grew 8' in one season? I am growing mine up a 1.5' x 7' trellis and then plan to train it sideways to run about 12'to the other side where it will meet the other plant. Hoping to see a hummer this summer
