Hi Ron,

lurker here...

I planted some traded MG seed last year. I've always loved and planted Heavenly Blue but this was free so I gave it a whirl. In the spot I planted it are many, many vining seedlings and I am wondering if they are in fact that same MG. I have Heavenly Blue coming up again and obviously, it's seedling looks nothing like this. Hope you can help and thanks in advance!

Hi Stephanie - The young plant that you posted is Fallopia convolvulus (synonym Polygonum convolvus) commonly known as Black Bindweed...it is actually a member of the Smartweed Family and not any type of Morning Glory although it is commonly mistaken for a Calystegia or a Convolvulus...

Take a look at the cotyledons of the Fallopia...they will be elongated oblong as compared to the butterfly shape of the embryo leaves of the Ipomoea...that's one easy way to tell them apart...

I'd remove the Fallopia because although it is an annual , it reseeds like crazy and it will get all over the place...

Just as I suspected. Advice taken, all seedlings are pulled, will be on the lookout for more! Thanks so much. I was confident you were the guy to ask!
