grafted tomatoes?

Has anyone ever heard of this before? A local nursery advertised them, and I can't remember the details of exactly what rootstock they use. They had some of the rarer varieties and a couple sounded good, so I went there today. Then I discovered they were charging $17.99 for a 1-gallon plant! I promptly put it back on the shelf. I thought the price was absolutely ridiculous when you can get 4" heirlooms for $1.99. The salesgal said the owner of the nursery claimed he got many more tomatoes off the grafted ones than nongrafted ones- maybe 5 times more or something like that. Just thought I'd see what others' opinions are of this.
