This is slightly OT, but I figure this is the most likely place to get this thing identified.

I found a worm-like creature today on top of the soil in my backyard. It has the shape of a worm, but is the width of a piece of thread. In fact, I thought it was a piece of thread moving in the wind at first until seeing that it was moving independently.

The tip of what seems to be the front is white. The rest is a brownish color, although that may be dirt covering it. If I were to stretch it out straight, the body would be approx 6-9 inches long.

Any thoughts on what this might be? It was completely on top of the soil, although the dirt in that area has been turned over recently. There are a couple plant containers nearby (with vermicompost in them) but not an actual garden. My main concern is that this may be some sort of parasite. I have multiple dogs.
