The closer to home you can find them, the kinder, friendlier the transport for your worms. Then just try to find someone with good prices and no S/H.

There are many good suppliers around. The problem this time of year is the heat. It can get hot enough to cook the worms depending on where they are shipped from and where you are. I used a supplier based on price and reputation and had excellent results. Type in your search bar the worm man and you will get his site and several other good ones. Of course this depends on which search site you use, I use yahoo.

I had great sucess with trinity worm farms in mo. shipping was free and i recieved 2.5 lbs of young worms for the price of one lb. great people and great prices.

You might try getting your worms the same way I did - I went to the Minnesota Gardening forum (substitute Virginia Gardening forum) and asked if there were any Minnesota gardeners who kept worm bins and if they would care to trade some worms for any plants I had. I worked out two trades and got some great worms for some of my excess plants. Perhaps you could find someone close enough to meet for the trade. Carmellia

One option when doing mail order is to ask the supplier to put a hold on the worms for your post office. That way when they would be ready to deliver to your door instead they would deliver a little postcard stating you have a package ready to pickup at the post office. This works equally well in the winter.

Depending upon the type of worm you want i have had good success with Kazarie worm farm and Hill108 on Ebay. Both of these shippers will put a PO hold on them if requested.

Why would a post office hold be as expedient as a regular delivery? Why not get the worms when you get the card? What if the worms arrived at the post office in time for the Saturday home delivery but a card was delivered instead, delaying pickup until Monday? When my worms came they did just fine, and that was 5 years ago. A good supplier wlll package them right, in some bedding. Dump the contents into the new home, bedding and all.

Chuckiebtoo -- the concern would be, since many of us work all day and our mail is delivered sometime around noon, the worms would be sitting in a mailbox out on the road for several hours. Either in the summer, with the sun beating down (we all know about dogs locked in cars in the summer), or the winter, with freezing temps outside, that could be fatal. They'd likely survive, perhaps, but they'd be much safer inside the postoffice for an extra day until you can pick them up.

Chuckie, exactly as Fadoodle said ::grins::. I only suggest it when delivery is a concern. I have only needed to have one PO hold and everything else has arrived fine ... howeevr i have made sure i would be home when the mailman came.
