Please post photos of the purported MG's so that we can try to determine what species you are contending with as there are thousands of different species and each can have different growth behavior...until you are able to post photos , there is no way for the audience here to know for certain what species it is that you are contending with...

The annuals are easier to contend with than some of the Calystegia or Convolvulus species which are cold hardy and spread by underground rhizomes...

An annual will show the characteristic cotyledons (the embryonic leaves) which are usually bi-lobed at the base of the plant...the cotyledons of the rhizomatous Calystegia and Convolvulus are most usually entire...
