I mixed the new, dry, bedding up with the old. It only worked for a short while, and then I would have to do it again. Leaving the top off for extended periods of time helped as well.

The best way I found to combat moisture, was to create a false bottom with chicken wire, supported by a couple pieces of wood. I then propped up one end of the bin, so all of the moisture would drain out of the holes at the other end.

How long have you had this bin set up. I reall have more trouble with moisture when the bedding gets processed and there is no fluff left in it. Might need a good separating harvesting. Just a thought. Steve

I'd say, if no liquid is coming out the bottom holes, your bin isn't to wet. As long as the worms are doing ok and multiplying that it is good. As Steve said above - it may be time to "harvest" your vermicastings

just dig it over and get some air into it, this time of year that should be all that's needed

Thanks, all of you! This is my first bin and has been up and running about 2 months. It's the biggest size rubbermaid bin, and I started with 500 worms. They are definitely multiplying and active, eating ALOT of food, no odor (just an earthy "basement" smell). I think they have just composted through a lot of food and the stuff on the bottom is dense. How deep do you let the "dense" stuff get before you harvest? I'd say it's about 3 to 4 in. of dense stuff, with unfinished stuff & fluffier stuff on the top 4". I am unsure how long to let it go before harvesting. When I harvest, can I "sift" out the unfinished stuff and return it to the bin?

let it go as long as you want, although it's good to air it up ocassionally, like by poking a garden fork down and lifting - harvest when you have time and can use the material ... the worms have very inefficient digestive systems and can work over the "completed" material for a long time, they don't care

and yes, anything that's still 'recognizeable' is what makes the starter for the renewed bin, although you'll have a hard time "sifting" it  :)

one harvesting method is to spread a piece of screen on top and feed above that for days or weeks - the worms will mostly be above the screen so there's less sorting out to do
