Selecting proper vine

Am looking for a hopefully somewhat drought resistant vine to conceal a 5 ft. wire fence. Lots of sun in summer and fair amount in winter with a couple of feet of snow on the ground Dec. thru March (usually). Ground is (river) rocky & clay, tough to dig a hole. Goal is to cover fence so as to enhance the look...also provide a barrier so dogs cannot readily see people walking the lane (about 25 feet away)and barking at them, so need something thick. Hydrangea? Looks good on paper. Any ideas will be appreciated.
