Maggots (real maggots) are larvae of flies...which would lay eggs on rotting meat. Are you composting meat waste? These might be some other type of larvae/grub... You can contact your extension service for identification. \
I think just reading the threads on this forum is very helpful. A good compost pile attracts worms, so anyone who composts has been an informal vermiculturist all along.
