I'm not an experienced gardener at all, but I do have a very large grape vine growing along a section of chain link fence in my backyard. As you can probably tell from your plant, the vines grow rather quickly. My vines have been trained to grow mostly up the fence and then out, so I get the most vigorous growth along the top of the fence and then spilling over the other side a bit. Near the trunk of the grape itself isn't too bad. I would think that, so long as you are okay with having to prune regularly, underplanting with a low-growing plant like a hosta wouldn't be a terrible idea.
