I like linear type of look but made with travertine stone/tiles? what size would you recommend? and which travertine? marble? linear stone?

Yes, a fireplace like this is a little more for looks than function. If you would want heat, you'd probably have to put an efficient wood insert in - quite a bit of money, but it would definitly heat then (check out quadrafire to see what I mean. http://www.quadrafire.com/ProductFinder.aspx?bid={31200E81-7EF8-4358-901D-6DE11BFD38DC})

You can also redo just the door of course. Lot's of companies out there offering these options.

Stone selection is such a personal thing. So many factors can be considered: do you like formal or rustic looks, do you want it to stand out or blend in, is there a color that you love? The list goes on and on.
I would start by finding some options you like, posting those or taking them to a stone supplier to see if they have something to get the look you want.

We had a very similar situation with our clients house, We covered the brick with plaster board and that gave us ability to run wires for sound and TV. Top of the ledge was covered by the same typr of granite us the stone around fireplace. And mantel was custom size of one of our designs. I have attached an image of final look.

How about cultured stones? These are stone tiles that are easy to apply.

what would you recommend for the paint color though? the room gets lots of sunlight and the furniture would be yellowish contemporary color...
