Calla Lilly questions.

The tag says full to part sun. What is the best way to grow calla lillies in central Texas. In a pot or the ground. Part shade, full shade. Do they bloom on and off all summer? Will they come back next year or will I havve to overwinter the pots in the house?

Some are the arrow shaped leaf and some are the hybrids with long thin leaves.

My callas come back every year, at least the leaves do, and unfortunately have not bloomed in two years. I am not sure if it's because they were in a semi-shady bed or if I'm not meeting other needs like water, etc. This year I moved them to a pot in full sun to see if I could get them to bloom again, but so far they haven't put up blooms. I've been kind of lazy with mine so I'd love to hear others' experiences.

From what I've read they are hardy to 10 degrees, so they should be fine staying outdoors in Central Texas--if there was any worry, you could make sure they were mulched before winter.

For some reason, they just look like a shade plant to me. I am glad to hear that they can take the sun. Hopefully, I can get them into the ground this weekend. Does it make a difference if they are the common or hybrid ones?

I have only had mine this season, so I don't have any long lasting experience... I have a few bulbs that I planted in filtered sun/mostly shade. They're almost a foot tall and will hopefully bloom soon. I bought an already blooming one and planted it in the ground in morning shade/afternoon sun and it has almost doubled in size and is putting a lot of blooms out. I hope everything will come back for me next year. Good luck with yours!

I planted tall white calla lilies (are those the hybrid?) in my garden a couple of years ago. Last year, all that returned was the foliage. But yesterday I notice that I have two white blooms! I really didnt expect them to do anything. I have them planted in an area that gets morning shade/afternoon sun..probably not the best place. They would probably prefer morning sun only. When I go to the nursery, they never have them displayed out in the full sun area. They are normally in an area that has filtered sunlight.

They like moisture and part sun. Too much shade and they are lanky at least and may not bloom.

A north facing bed near a dripping faucet would be ideal. I've had them in several hours of full sun, even some afternoon sun, but not much.

Patty, I notice when I was watering mine one is starting to bloom. I guess they will like it there with the filtered sun. I will have the bed done by next weekend. The guy will be here Sunday to start then finish it his next day off which will be Monday or Wednesday. Thanks again they are going to look great up there. John has been faithfully watering them, lol. He likes them a lot.

Late to the conversation and new to Texas, but I want the beautiful calla lillies I grew previously in another state. What worked amazingly was direct morning sun with afternoon/evening shade and ever moist soil. Hopefully that plan works here, too.
