My bins are teeming!

I have now been vermicomposting for a couple months, and LOVE it. I have noticed that my food scraps disappear faster and I am having fewer problems with smell and hot spots. I think it just needed some time to build up enough bacteria and other decomposers.

I have tons of cocoons and lots of adults, but I don't see many babies or juveniles, which is strange.

Worm on!

i know, this isnt nuclear science, but I love when it makes it to critical mass!

I just split up my bin because I am getting better at managing moisture, and have a whole buncha worms. makes me happy.

Congrats on success! I just split my worms up also, because I need to increase my waste disposal capability. I'm not sure how often to divide them though, when is critical mass? When do they self limit population growth?

I dont know when the absolute value is, but if I have a fairly dense population the whole thickness of the bin, Im starting to split off (got a master gardener and a psychologist interested this weekend! (shes not my shrink ;-))

If i can pick up a whole writhing handful at several places in the bin, I feel OK splitting them. Its been about a month since I gave a few handfulls away, and about 2 weeks since I started my quicker bin (fruit, tea, and coffee)

My bin is thriving too. I'm astonished at the number of worms! Yippee!

If I took a handful from several places of my bin, it would be empty! I have a very small bin, i guess. (bin-envy). However with 1.5 cf surface area, I can get a squirmy handful 2-3 places, without digging. So, I split.

How's the QUICK BIN going? I've been curious about that!
