I'm thinking that the first one is also a grape (like the second one) but badly infested with a virus. More pictures would help secure an ID.

I don't think it is a virus-- as the leaves were like the other vine (except that they are green and white) before the hail. The hail stripped it of leaves and those left behind were shredded but still alive. If these vines are in fact grape, how come it died back all the way? And no fruit? I feel cheated if it is a grape!

I think they look like porcelain berry vines, plain and variegated versions. Proper name is Ampelopsis.

Thanks Spinderwoman-- that would make more sense than grape because the previous owners have gone to great lengths to plant various plants that bloom and fruit at different times throughout the season-- very well done!

Will this vine die back every winter? What if it is protected? In warmer climates, does this plants' vines stay alive?

We have 2 of these climbing our backyard fence. It is definitely porcelain vine. They will die back and look completely dead in winter but will come back in spring. Word of warning: they will get BIG! And they will seed like crazy, but the seedlings are easy to pull up. Once yours mature, they get a very pretty berry on them in late summer, blue and purple and turquoise. I love these vines, love the variegation and the grape-like look of the leaves.
