My thoughts: Adding paper,covering the smell and letting those creatures get rid of the offending material, that they are seemingly happy to do, would be the best remedy. I will be interested to hear what happens.

Remove the mess.
I did that with wheat germ - yuk what a smell.

Since it's now all mixed up, removing it would mean starting again. I think I might as well wait. I should know in a few days and will post the results.

Mixing in shredded paper seems to be working. The smell is still there but only just, and more importantly, the worms are happily all over the bin again rather than the side opposite the offending material.

The stuff was disgustingly slimy and the sensation of maggots wriggling between my fingers is something I want to forget real quick.

Get yourself a little hand-driven garden fork, or if you bin/pile is bigger, a 3-4 tine long handled one. It's one of the tools of the trade, and will save you a lot of willies.
