big tunnels in my bin

I have a worm bin that I just started. I used an old recyling bin. It has an open top and I have it covered with a piece of cardboard. When I open it to put scraps in

their are large 1.5 in wide areas that are "tunneled" on top of the peat moss that I have the worms in. Are the worms doing this or do I have a vermin problem. Do rats eat worms? Do they eat the scraps that I put in? I have only been feeding them my scraps from my juicer... Just wondering if I should rethink my cover. Most of my worms are hangin out at the bottom of the bin.
