Is it ok to keep the top of a rubbermaid plastic tub (53 L or larger) on and make 1/4" holes in the bottom for air and drainage?

Also, can I sprinkle diatomaceous earth or boric acid on the ground around the tub to keep out pests? We have fire ants here in Houston and they are a nuisance! Inside our bathroom, we sprinkle oxiclean on the ground if we see an area that ants are coming in from. Seems to work! Any other things to use outside to ward off ants?

I also live in Fire ant country and have put my bins on a 2x4 frame with casters screwed underneath. I use Sevin dust, boric acid, or whatever is handy, dusted on the garage floor, and then roll the bin into the center of it -seems to keep the pests out real well. Plus, the wheels make it easy to move the bins, clean underneath - whatever.
