Garnetmoth, I'm pretty sure you have been blessed with a recently discovered phonomenom known as spontaneous worm intensive replicational generation (SWIRG). This rarely seen occurence is so rare that little is known about it, but the Swirgologist branch of FEMA is about to begin a research program headed by FEMA's director Michael Brown.

First respondents could be getting in contact with you soon to investigate your particular incidence of SWIRG, or not.

Preliminary studies have shown that a genetic abnormality affecting a small percentage of a herd may lead to the population explosion. Also be aware that each instance may be a one time thing, or not.

In my personal opinion, just continue to do whatever you were doing, and be vigilant regarding mutant worms among the good ones. Those create lots of havoc if cornered.
