Nice going, Tracy! It's great you're walking a daily route for the extra worm grub. You may want to go with smaller Rubbermaid bins to expand your herd. The big ones get real heavy even with 7-8" worth of vermicompost. What are you going to do with all the extra compost?

Thanks for the validation, Andrew. My family just rolls their eyes when I get going on this subject.

I'm at the point where I'm thinking I might start selling the worms and/or compost, but want to check the forums and such to see if there are any laws or regs I need to be aware of. There are a lot of farmer's markets, nurseries, and eco-aware organizations around my area, so I thought I'd start looking around.

I get all googly eyed at the idea of vermicomposting all the scraps from all of the cafes and restaurants along my walk (there are at least 15, at last count). In my area, the city will take your kitchen scraps from private homes, but not from apartment buildings or businesses.

And thanks for the heads up on the bins - I was at the hardware store today looking at the different ones, but couldn't decide. However, I did get two ten-gallon buckets to transport the scraps from the cafe.

You may want to browse through this Farmer's Market sub-group at vermicomposting dot com. Some regions have stricter requirements than others. Eventually, you may want to consider a Flow-through wormery to handle more food scraps and make harvesting easier.

Thanks for the great info! I just spent three hours checking out all the different designs for FT bins and for harvesters - I especially like the trommels. I'm excited to split my worm population into a couple of FT bins.

One of the FT bin designs used PVC pipe with drywall screws staggered on them, presumably so that they could be turned to bring down the VC more effectively. Any thoughts on whether this is preferred over a simple string/stick grate?
