Jennifer...Check out this link: HappyDRanch.com Click on their "invertebrate" page, and Black Soldier Fly larvae. I am guessing this is what you are seeing. What kind of bin do you have? How big? How many worms, (approx)? If it is plastic, you might need to monitor your moisture. Are you putting in a lot more food? When a lot of different creatures show up suddenly, it is usually telling of what is going on in your bin. I think that the price you are paying for your worms, (including shipping), sounds reasonable. You might do a search to see if there are more local growers, when looking for a better price and no shipping.

Why are you getting more worms? you can separate some out to start a new bin. You dont have to restart just because you have other insects... or maybe im not understanding you.

Im from Cincinnati, I cant think of anyone there who sells.

water the bin? I used to pour a bit of water or leachate in when it seemed too dry, but then the moisture acumulated in the bottom and it got really foul and anaerobic. If my pile needs moisture, I usually put in a wet handful of bedding. ive had less stinky bin that way.

I did understand that I had soilder fly larve earlier in the summer, cuz they were SMALL and grey; now they are HUGE, but as long as they are helping out, I will try to ignore the yuck factor of them...I mean it can't be any worse then the goopy food I reach into from my feed buckets, right?
And I have actually started another bin with some hatchlings, so I'm hoping I can breed my own worms. The reason I was going to buy more was really bc I don't think the amt of worms I have is enough to consume the food my husband and I scrap each day...I love my worms and I'm excited to learn new things everyday.
On a buying note, there are wholesale bait sellers here in Cincy where I can get a pound of worms for $53, which is sad really!
