clematis generally take three years to get going- especially from cuttings, or those little plugs you get from the garden centers.

but they also like larger containers, since they have a thing about keeping their roots at a consistent moist/cool level.

morning glories are hard to beat as far as bang for your buck, though- especially now with the japanese varieties trickling down into the mainstream :)

Trumpet creeper is a great choice for a fast growing container vine- it's invasive enough that it should only really BE kept in a container- but that doesn't stop it from growing 20 feet in a season without trying.

honeysuckles take well to arbors- as do climbing roses, if you can deal with the thorns.
