Container Cherry Tomatoes

I am new to all types of gardening and I am trying to learn as much as I can. As my 'name' indicates I am truly learning as I go and I'm hoping you can offer me some general advice.

This is my second year planting cherry tomatoes in a deck container. Last year's crop yielded quite a few from 4 plants. I did realize I had too many plants in the container which is about at least 10 gallons. This year I only planted 3. Last year, towards the end of the season I had many splitting tomatoes. I think I read somewhere that this is caused by inconsistent watering. Is that true? In an effort to prevent this can anyone tell me the general rules for watering and fertilizing. I bought Miracle Grow for Tomatoes. Is that good or is there something better? I planted them deep and pinched off the bottom branches that touch the dirt. Any further advice? I appreciate it. Thanks, Jennie
