Those pumpkins only get big because they only allow one pumpkin to grow on one plant. You'd have to keep pinchin all the flowers that form so that only one pumpkin grows. Then all the plants energy goes to make one big motha of a pumpkin.

I've used the Miracle Gro Tomato Fertilizer this year and last year. I never wait until the fruit form and I've had good results so far. I use a quick-start formula with more phosphorous for root production right after transplant and then after the plant looks established (producing flowers) I switch over to the tomato fertilizer so it'll help make flowers and fruit.

I mixed 2 cups of phosphate, 2 cups of greensand, and 1 cup of cornmeal into the hole I put each mater in this year. I have the most darkest green and healthy plants I ever had. Phosphate is good for roots. No good roots = crappy plant, gardening basics 101.

i'm similar, i mix bone meal, kelp and high P guano into the soil around the transplant and a little more in the hole before i drop the plant in. pretty healthy plants going so far...
