Are worms OK with spices?

Hi All,

I've just started making ginger beer again and I generate a fair amount of ginger pulp - I blitz ginger root and squeeze the juice out. Most of the fiery stuff is in the juice, but the pulp is still pretty gingery. Seems a shame to bin it, so I wondered how my worms will deal with it. They say you're not supposed to give worms spicy stuff. I think if humans can eat it, so can worms, but there's a lot of this pulp, and if it's no good for them, they'll either die or go somewhere there isn't any ginger - I don't have a base to my vermicomposter so they might burrow down and out - although usually, when my worms make a bolt for it, they go upwards and congregate at the inside edge of the lid.

So, are they OK with large amounts of ginger?

From what I've read (haven't fed mine Ginger), try a small amount and see how they deal with it. If ok, gradually increase the amount, as long as they are good. You may reach a "saturation" point where they basically say "No More!" then back off on the proportion of ginger.

I usually pre-rot the ginger pulp for several months and fed it to the worms mixed with other stuff. By that time, whatever ginger sharpness was left in the pulp had dissipated.

I have not had problems putting a few pounds of ginger in Rubbermaid bins. I put the ginger at the bottom of an empty bin, and dumped the contents of a full bin on top, which is my usual practice for adding materials that might attract flies. The ginger was from plants that I had grown and neglected to harvest before the roots started to rot. As I recall, the ginger rotted quickly in the bin. By the way, I regularly add quite a bit of hot pepper skins and seeds to the bin when roasting green chile, and don't see any problems.
