Great question.

I'm planning on doing the same thing later this season. Tomato growing has ben SLOW in So Cal this year, but I'm hoping for a bountiful harvest come August/September.

I'm planning on presenting the tomatoes alone, with and without salt, and making rating sheets for people to use as a comparison guide.

I want to rate them according to aesthetics, aroma, flavor, and texture. I also want to have them rated in categories (best bi-color, pink, red etc.), and have an overall winner as a "best in show".

I'm also planning on doing some research on what wines or beers would couple well with tomatoes, so people have something to drink as a kind of palate cleanser in between tomatoes.

Maybe after the tasting, I'll cook some burgers on the grill and throw some heriloom slices on them for good measure just to close out the night.

That's my plan so far.

So all that to say, why not go all out and make an event out of it?

I will be doing one, Tomato Gods willing, with my family after labor day. there will be plates of tomatoes and we will go from bare naked, through salt and pepper, and then all the way to bacon, lettuce and mayo. It will be fun. I will share the results. Remember, it is all about the tomatoes...

We go to MAGTAG, an even held each year in Balto. It's nice and a lot of fun. Lotsa people come and bring their maters, which are judged with pennies placed in a red plastic cup, one to five pennies for ratings--one being a horrible tomato, five being food of the gods--each tom gets its own cup. To quickly find the winners the heaviest cups are weighed.

We did one several years ago to test about a dozen varieties that we grew. Invited some friends and we tested for flavor, texture, skin toughness among other things to weed out several varieties.

I was thinking of having something similar to a tomato tasting, but I would be selling my tomatoes. I have about 20 different varieties in my garden, and the plants are all doing great so I was thinking I would let customers who wondered what some heirloom or hybrid actually tasted like come into my garden and see the tomatoes actually growing on the plant, that way they can also figure how much space the plant would take up. They would point out the tomatoes they wanted and I would pick them right before their eyes. When they got all the ones they wanted I would weigh them and charge them what, maybe $2 a pound. I guess I would have to save a lot of plastic bags so I could separate out the different varieties. If they Emailed me back what tomatoes they liked the most or least and why I would give them some free tomatoes next time they came. One selling point would be I use absolutely no pesticides or herbicides in my garden.

We have party here every year called the Buffalo~Niagara Tomato TasteFest. Everyone brings their tomatoes. We have contests. We also have a regular picnic too. It is a lot of fun. So, I'm not the only one thinking of holding a tomato taste-off in a couple months. It's also my first time growing heirloom tomatoes & I've got 10+ varieties growing. I'm planning on having the taste-off w/ salt & also an untouched tomato for size/appearance. We'll also turn it into a dinner - burgers & BLTs. We'll invite family & close friends & it should be a fun way of determining the favorites & repeats for next year.

I host one here in Kansas City each year...this August will be our third one. Should have close to 100 varieties of tomatoes represented this time! My blog has pics of the last two events.

Well, I think that tomato tasting can be more of preference and subjective. It is not just the taste but look/shape/color.. are also factors.But it should be amusing and fun. Also, you can introduce various ways to slice and eat them, salt, pepper, olive oils, lemon juice, sprinkle with basils, chives, tarragon..etc.Right now I am going to slice a rutgers , top it with some salt, black pepper, olive oil and garnish with fresh basil...
OK. On the scale of 1 to five, I rate it 4..that is rutgers
