Wisteria query

I'd just like to know if anyone else has noticed how fussy Wisteria sinensis can be? Here is a picture of one (we have 5 separate plants in our garden) at the front of our house. Its growing on a thin layer of acidic clay soil (pH 6) overlying near solid slate. The ground gets baked bone dry and very hard with temperatures of around 30 degrees Centigrade common in the summer and in the winter (rainy season) it's exposed to a few very mild frosts ~ 0 degrees Centigrade. We have never pruned it the way all the books recommend (I think one is supposed to give it two formative prunings per growing season) instead just hacking it back when it starts to outgrow its space and yet every year without fail we are rewarded with the most fragrant, stunning show of intense violet flowers. Masses and masses which last for about a month! I've seen a fair few Wisteria vines in the UK, but none of them come anywhere close often producing a very sparce show with more leaves than flowers! Does anyone know why this is?
